I'll go ahead and make a plot summary now:
Code Geass is set in a place named Britannia, where our protagonist, Lelouch Lamperogue [Lelouch's real name is Lelouch vi Britannia, but changed it for the sake of concealing his identity of prince of Britannia], lives. Britannia is ruled by Charles Britannia, father of Lelouch. Britannia is consisted of Japan, the Middle East, and Europe (That's as far as I know). When Lelouch was 10, his mother died from a Terrorist attack, and while doing so, his sister, Nunally Lamperogue [Remember that this is a fake last name], has witnessed it, and has gotten blind and paralyzed form the waist down in shock. After that tragic scene, Lelouch confronts his father, asking if he even cared about his mother's death, then when he hears his father saying, in a very complicated way, that he didn't care, Lelouch resigned his position as prince of Britannia, and plotted to destroy Britannia, for his mother and Nunally's sake. His best friend, Suzaku Kururugi, is a Britannian that A "witch" named C.C. gave the power of geass to Lelouch [Geass comes in different forms, Lelouch's Geass power allows him to take control of another person's mind, given that he has eye contact with them, but he can only do this once. ex. If he tells someone to punch another person, they will do it, but if they finish, and he tells them to do something else, they won't do it.], now Lelouch, with his powerful intellect, is now able to "destroy" Britannia. He creates the alias, "Zero" to conceal his real identity, for the sake of Nunally not knowing, but still wears a mask so that other people will not recognize him, including his father. Zero and a group of rebels create the group named the Black Knights, with the "Ace" that also goes to school with him, Kallen, but of course, she doesn't even know about the real identity of Zero. The only person that knows the real identity of Zero is C.C., which made a contract with Lelouch, which we find out about in the 2nd season.
That was a little introduction to some of the characters and the main plot (for the first season)
